| Science and Road Safety. The most obvious link here is with Physics. Students can use cars to learn about acceleration, g-forces, conservation and conversion of energy, co-efficients of friction and so on. Experiments or simulations can be done to measure stopping distances at various speeds, the effects of ABS braking and wet roads. The way cars are designed to crumple, and how forces are absorbed in a crash can also be highlighted. Our Year 10 class also attended "Physics in Motion" at Adelaide International Raceway, in which many of these principles were demonstrated. Students can also learn about Radar, and how it operates. Local Police officers are only too pleased to come and demonstrate this equipment to Science classes. Schools can also purchase radar guns from Safe Drive Australia These guns can also be used on Sports Days to measure runners' speeds, so the cost could be shared between faculties. |
