| Mathematics and Road Safety. The obvious connections here involve the gathering, interpreting and graphing of data about Road Safety. This could be based on traffic passing the school (either simply counting various makes or, with the help of a radar gun, working out statistics related to the speed of passing cars). Radar guns can be purchased from Safe Drive Training Australia. Exercises could include calculations of average speeds, highest, lowest, percentage over the speed lmit, etc. Results can be graphed and interpreted, perhaps using MS Excel. Alternatively, statistical analysis can be based on available Road Crash data from the Transport SA website. Students can then look at trends through the years, most vulnerable age groups, worst times in the week, etc. |
