Comments from students
on the 2005 Mock Crash
"I
think that the Emergency Services feel angry - that they have to use their time
for someone who can't obey the road rules and drive safely, and if at night they
have to wake up. And also worried as it could be someone they know"
"I
learnt that there is also a lot more to a crash afterwards, specially with the
insurance, that there were a lot of little things that could lose you a lot of
money"
Chantel Mason
"I
learnt that it takes a lot longer than I thought because you can't just pull
them out of the car. You have to cut the car to move them as little as
possible"
"I
didn't know you lost so much money for not wearing a seatbelt, drinking etc"
Jack Duldig
"It
is a long and traumatic process, especially when the jaws of life must be used to
cut out the victim"
"You
can be told the consequences of driving badly whether speeding or driving drunk
1000 times, but it is nowhere near as effective as watching it unfold"
"I
believe they (emergency services) are nervous, maybe even slightly sick at what
they're about to encounter, but the adrenaline would take over,"
Michael Plunkett
"In
a small community like ours everyone knows everyone and are affected"
Most
vivid memory - "How many people were actually involved in the crash and
who were helping"
Amber Hartley
"Time
is everything - a person's life can change within seconds"
Chris Sawers
Most
vivid memory - "The (victim's) mother coming and pushing me out of her way"
Steven Portnoff
"The CFS must be thinking 'I hope I don't know them'"
