Vocational Education and Training (VET) is recognised as valuable learning where students develop industry knowledge and skills and attain credits toward their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).

VET students acquire their skills and knowledge for work through a nationally recognised industry-developed training package or accredited course. VET is delivered, assessed, and certified by registered training organisations (RTOs).

Birdwood High School is part of the Adelaide Hills Student Pathways alliance which offers students a wide range of VET courses. Year 11 and 12 students can access a variety of career pathways across many industries; it is not just reserved for a pathway within the trades. They can complete VET qualifications in other sectors, including business administration, health, hospitality, aged care and nursing, creative arts, sport and recreation, animal care, agriculture, and many more.

Most AHSPs courses will include a Structured Workplace Learning placement in industry. Benefits include:

  • Opportunities to explore areas that assist students in making decisions about further study and work.
  • VET qualifications are nationally recognised.
  • Students may gain credit towards traineeships and apprenticeships.
  • Student’s VET results will also be included as part of the student’s South Australian Certification of Education (SACE) requirements see the SACE Board website www.sace.sa.edu.au for further information
  • Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) increases opportunities for employment. The skills and knowledge gained whilst completing the work placement are valued by employers.

VET course applicants are expected to participate in an information session, an enrolment interview, and undertake a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) test. They must also satisfy any conditions for enrolment in the respective program.
